D3 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel developed for applications demanding very high wear resistance and compressive strength.

Heat Treatment

  • Soft annealing
  • Austenitizing generally around 950–1050°C
  • Controlled cooling
  • Double tempering according to required hardness

Mechanical Properties

  • Typical hardened hardness: approximately 58–62 HRC
  • Very high wear resistance
  • High compressive strength
  • Lower toughness than D2
