Heat Treatment

  • Normalising
  • Annealing
  • Hardening approximately 820–860°C
  • Water or oil quenching depending on section/application
  • Tempering according to required hardness and toughness

Mechanical Properties

Typical normalised/Q&T properties depend on section:

  • Tensile strength: approximately 570–850 MPa
  • Good machinability
  • Moderate toughness
  • Can be induction hardened
  • Surface hardness can be substantially increased by induction/flame hardening

Equivalent Grades

  • DIN: C45 / 1.0503
  • AISI/SAE: 1045
  • JIS: S45C
  • EN: C45
